BIOPAP® Innovation Day – Driving Sustainable Food Packaging Forward

It has been a fantastic, lively, and constructive BIOPAP® Innovation Day, held at BIOPAP®’s Academy on October 22nd.

The goal of this special day was to share and discuss the latest sustainable food packaging innovations and best practices across our entire value chain.

Through real-world case studies, we demonstrated that sustainability can—and must—be an everyday goal:
driving fair value distribution in food and food services, enhancing operational efficiency, improving nutrition and food experiences, fostering biological circularity, supporting local community growth, and protecting both food and natural ecosystems.

Together, we traced our sustainability journey from well-managed forests—our renewable and local raw materials—through food preparation and service, all the way to composting, closing the loop of a truly circular system.

Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost.

This has been our goal since the start of our venture at BIOPAP®. This is also the 2025 theme for the International Compost Awareness Week. With professional and domestic use of BIOAP® Food containers and packaging solutions we have been promoting composting for over 20 years in all kinds of communities and at any scale. BIOPAP® Trays are CIC, OK Compost HOME and BPI certified compostable – from backyard home composters, to community composters, to large-scale facilities to all those who recognize the many benefits of using compost in soils.

The 2025 ICAW ‘s theme was chosen by all of the international partners who are part of the International Compost Alliance – making it truly an international theme.  This year’s theme was inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.”

The goal is valid for all countries and all continents, from large cities to local villages, from farms to fields and forests, composting is an essential element in developing sustainable communities. Composting allows communities to manage their own waste locally, create local job opportunities and support healthy soils with locally made compost, supporting local farming. By collecting food rests and food waste together with compostable packaging we’re repurposing the food that otherwise would go into the landfill or incineration. In the contrary by composting food waste, we’re creating fresh nutrients for the soil, which regenerates the earth and provides healthier food for everyone in the community.

Composting needs everyone’s commitment and every citizen must become an actor of this virtuous cycle, no matter the size of your home, garden, or community! Together, through the power of compost, we can create a more sustainable future for our communities!

Do not forget some of the strong benefits from organic recycling and compost use:

• Composting reduces methane emissions through aerobic managed decomposition providing for a more sustainable community.
• Composting lowers greenhouse gasses by improving carbon sequestration in the soil. Getting the carbon back into the soil serves as a “carbon bank,” helping to store carbon thereby removing it from the atmosphere.
• Compost provides essential nutrients for plants, promoting vibrant gardens and farms. Healthier soil leads to healthier, more nutritious food for our communities.
• Compost use increases the water-holding capacity of our soils; important as our communities are more and more often seeing drought and or intense rain events causing soil runoff and erosion.
• Community Gardens and Green Spaces: Compost plays a vital role in community gardens, fostering green spaces that provide fresh produce, recreational opportunities, and community gathering places.

Le deuxième jour de MARCA Fiera Bologna, le jury a motivé cet important prix de la manière suivante :

Une recherche d’entreprise visant à l’élimination totale des matériaux plastiques en vue d’obtenir des contenants en papier de haute performance. Un aspect tout aussi significatif, outre les éléments techniques, qui contribue à la redéfinition d’un processus de distribution alimentaire dans les hôpitaux, les établissements RSA et le secteur de la restauration.
