The Airline catering sector and the transport catering sector in general is expanding steadily with the increasing number of passengers and world connections. However, professional catering service providers are confronted with the growing environmental impact of these services and the need to operate more efficiently. BIOPAP® innovative food packaging solutions address these growing concerns with an integrated eco-design approach combining renewable raw materials (PEFC certified and USDA Biobased), production process efficiency, improved organoleptic performances, effective and circular waste management.
BIOPAP® provides and array of innovations, specifically designed for the airline and transport catering sector, offering increased operational efficiency both in production and onboard together with a ground breaking carbon footprint reduction.
The Innovative and compostable BIOPAP® ATLAS hot meal tray casserole is the cornerstone of these sustainable solutions.
The integration of high engineering design and automated manufacturing combined with over 20 years’ experience in sustainable and compostable food packaging solutions has delivered this outstanding result. BIOPAP® ATLAS SI 25 hot meal casserole has been specifically designed to best perform in airline catering offering high stiffness, natural touch and feel and superior food passenger experience while also allowing a smooth waste management. Turning waste into valuable resources is now possible through composting both food rests and BIOPAP® casseroles.
BIOPAP® ATLAS hot meal casserole has been engineered to replace the traditional enameled aluminum casserole featuring a curled edge design to be operated directly on fast automated filling and crimping lines or on manual outer stations. The scale up is easy and with little or no set-up. The curled edge design performed with proprietary technology allow high stiffness throughout preparation, reheating and service, with a reduced raw material consumption.
BIOPAP® ATLAS SI 25 casserole has extreme temperature resistance from – 80°C of Nitrogen tunnels to ventilated ovens up to 185°C to 215°C, it is also Burn Test approved. The natural properties of BIOPAP® materials does not make it brittle at low temperature ensuring high speed automated handling without food container breaks with relevant food waste saving, and waste rate reduction. At the same time, it does not make the tray to get softer during re-heating and service ensuring efficiency and safety on board. Never use steam oven functions with BIOPAP® trays, this will just lead to higher energy consumption for the steam generation without any benefit.
High grease and moisture properties provided by BIOPAP® food packaging solutions makes them the perfect choice for all catering process from Cook & Chill to Cook & Freeze, in preparation, storage, thawing and re-heating.
BIOPAP® ATLAS SI 25 casserole increase passengers’ food experience. There is no enzymatic interaction between BIOPAP and food, colors and vitamins are kept at best offering more taste, nutrition a visual appearance. The different heat conductivity compared to Aluminum, Plastics or Bagasse offers more homogeneous temperature distribution and better organoleptic results after re-heating.
Compostability then comes as a strong operational and economic benefit at the end of the catering service both for on board personnel and for ground staff at the airport. Food rests do not need any sorting from packaging waste. BIOPAP® ATLAS is collected with food rest and food waste without separation, manipulation or costs. The biowaste is then transformed into compost turning and expensive waste into a resource impacting positively the local farming sector. BIOPAP® compostable food trays offer also significant advantages compared to rotable solutions saving the whole water, detergents, energy needed for the for the washing up and the time and manpower needed for the food rest separation from food containers and the washing up. BIOPAP® Is certified compostable according to CIC, OK Compost Home, BPI ensuring best output and compost quality in composting plants.
In addition to above advantages, the compostable, paper based BIOPAP® ATLAS hot meal casserole sets a new milestone in carbon footprint reduction, so important for the airlines.
INNOV HUB, the prominent Italian laboratory has just performed a Cradle-to-Grave LCA assessment on the innovative and compostable BIOPAP ATLAS SI 25 Hot meal casserole comparing it to the traditional Aluminium casserole.
The result is groundbreaking: BIOPAP ATLAS offers 2,5 times less CO2 emissions.
The impact is massive: The replacement of existing Aluminum casserole with the innovative BIOPAP® SI25 casserole will allow a saving of 35.6 KgCO2 emissions per 1.000 units. Considering an annual distribution of 40.000.000 units the saving would correspond to 1.424.960 KgCO2/year.
As far as CO2 emissions are concerned, this value corresponds approximately to the average CO2 emissions of 11.874.667 km using a medium-sized car.
If we take into consideration the average absorption of a tree in a year (about 7,5 kg CO2/year), this value is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 189.995 trees/year.
By using BIOPAP® ATLAS SI 25 casserole the airlines are directly benefiting form a significant carbon food print reduction in their operations and contribute to reduce the catering environmental impact, becoming fully circular. A growing number of Airports are starting and running own composting plants reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also creating a virtuous cycle with the neighbouring agricultural activities.
Turn Airline catering circular and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the operations, with BIOPAP® innovative food packaging solutions it is possible.
