2005-2025 BIOPAP at the forefront of sustainability also in carbon storage

Our Head-Quarter and part of Plant 1 is celebrating in 2025 20 years from its erection, the first Bioclimatic industrial building of its kind.

Entirely built with a lamellar wood structure and mineralized wood chip walls it has been storing already since 2 decades over 300 T of Carbon captured in the Atmosphere. Mineralized wood chip walls are 1/5th of the weight of traditional concrete and 3 times more insulating.

The bioclimatic design made by Architects Nastasha Pulitzer and Antonio Los takes into consideration the position of the building against the sun path during the seasons, reducing energy intake in summer and maximizing intake in winter time.

Indirect sunlight is caught through large skylights ensuring natural lighting throughout the year. Artificial light is used only few hours a day during the winter season. Natural Light, High ceilings, clear natural walls and Wooden atmosphere ensure wellbeing for the body and the mid. The solar power plant on its roofs has been installed in 2009 and has been saving in 15 years of activity over 430 T of CO2 emissions.
The original power of 70 kWp power it will be revamped this year to 140 kWp ensuring 100% autonomous electricity production for the building and industrial activities together with the solar power Plant 3.

At BIOPAP we never stop innovating our eco-system, our sustainable food packaging solutions, our infrastructures and our technologies, always pushing boundaries in eco-design. We offer food producers and caterers tools to enhance efficiency and customer food experience, reducing landfilling and incineration by driving more food rest to composing, giving back to nature in biological circularity.

Everyday we want to show that sustainability is not only beneficial but also affordable.

International Compost Awarness Week in May 2025

    Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost.

This has been our goal since the start of our venture at BIOPAP®. This is also the 2025 theme for the International Compost Awareness Week. With professional and domestic use of BIOAP® Food containers and packaging solutions we have been promoting composting for over 20 years in all kinds of communities and at any scale. BIOPAP® Trays are CIC, OK Compost HOME and BPI certified compostable – from backyard home composters, to community composters, to large-scale facilities to all those who recognize the many benefits of using compost in soils.

The 2025 ICAW ‘s theme was chosen by all of the international partners who are part of the International Compost Alliance – making it truly an international theme.  This year’s theme was inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.”

The goal is valid for all countries and all continents, from large cities to local villages, from farms to fields and forests, composting is an essential element in developing sustainable communities. Composting allows communities to manage their own waste locally, create local job opportunities and support healthy soils with locally made compost, supporting local farming. By collecting food rests and food waste together with compostable packaging we’re repurposing the food that otherwise would go into the landfill or incineration. In the contrary by composting food waste, we’re creating fresh nutrients for the soil, which regenerates the earth and provides healthier food for everyone in the community.

Composting needs everyone’s commitment and every citizen must become an actor of this virtuous cycle, no matter the size of your home, garden, or community! Together, through the power of compost, we can create a more sustainable future for our communities!

Do not forget some of the strong benefits from organic recycling and compost use:

    • Composting reduces methane emissions through aerobic managed decomposition providing for a more sustainable community.
    • Composting lowers greenhouse gasses by improving carbon sequestration in the soil. Getting the carbon back into the soil serves as a “carbon bank,” helping to store carbon thereby removing it from the atmosphere.
    • Compost provides essential nutrients for plants, promoting vibrant gardens and farms. Healthier soil leads to healthier, more nutritious food for our communities.
    • Compost use increases the water-holding capacity of our soils; important as our communities are more and more often seeing drought and or intense rain events causing soil runoff and erosion.
    • Community Gardens and Green Spaces: Compost plays a vital role in community gardens, fostering green spaces that provide fresh produce, recreational opportunities, and community gathering places.

Congratulations to Abbie Sawyer from Athens, Georgia, 2025’s winner of the ICAW 2025 Poster Contest. We love it!

    So, let’s compost all together.

BIOPAP® ATLAS Hot meal casserole ground-breaking carbon footprint reduction in airline catering

The compostable, paper based BIOPAP® ATLAS hot meal casserole sets a new milestone in carbon footprint reduction for the airline catering.

INNOV HUB, the prominent Italian laboratory has just performed a Cradle-to-Grave LCA assessment on the innovative and compostable BIOPAP ATLAS SI 25 Hot meal casserole comparing it to the traditional Aluminium casserole.

The result is groundbreaking: BIOPAP ATLAS offers 2,5 times less CO2 emissions.

The impact is massive: The replacement of existing Aluminium casserole with the innovative BIOPAP® SI25 casserole will allow a saving of 35.6 KgCO2 emissions per 1.000 units. Considering an annual distribution of 40.000.000 units the saving would correspond to 1.424.960 KgCO2/year.

As far as CO2 emissions are concerned, this value corresponds approximately to the average CO2 emissions of 11.874.667 km using a medium-sized car.

If we take into consideration the average absorption of a tree in a year (about 7,5 kg CO2/year), this value is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 189.995 trees/year.

The combination of high engineering design and automated manufacturing combined with 20 years’ experience in sustainable and compostable food packaging solutions has delivered this outstanding result. BIOPAP® ATLAS SI 25 hot meal casserole has been specifically designed to best perform in airline catering offering natural touch and feel and superior food passenger experience while offering also a smooth waste management turning waste into valuable resources through composting both food rests and BIOPAP® casseroles.

By using BIOPAP® ATLAS SI 25 casserole the airlines are directly benefiting form a significant carbon food print reduction in their operation and contribute to reduce the catering environmental impact, becoming fully circular. A growing number of Airports are starting and running own composting plants reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also creating a virtuous cycle with the neighbouring agricultural activities.

BIOPAP® Atlas hot meal tray is a powerful tool: OK compost Home, BPI and CIC certified, with a fully European supply chain based on renewable raw materials coming only from well-manged PEFC certified forests.

Scaling up BIOPAP® ATLAS SI 25 is easy, it can be directly used on existing automated high speed crimping lines.

With the up-coming WTCE fair in Hamburg, next week, this is going to be a key factor in discussions for the Airlines and more and more for the Airport Authorities also. Turn airline catering sustainable and circular.

Italy Championing recycling of packaging waste

Italy Championing in recycling of packaging waste and organic waste treatment, BIOPAP® forerunner in compostable, high-performance food packaging solutions.

The recycling of packaging waste in Italy continues reaching levels of European excellence: in 2023 it reached 75.3%, up from 70.7% in 2022, exceeding not only the European 65% target by 2025, but also that of 70% by 2030.

The results have been published on Friday 13 December 2024 at the National Conference of the Recycling Industry, promoted by the Foundation for Sustainable Development in collaboration with Conai and Pianeta 2030, the monthly magazine of Corriere della Sera, under the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, Ispra and the National System for Environmental Protection.

Almost all supply chains exceed the European targets: paper and cardboard 92.3%, steel 87.8%, glass 77.4% (even if it is down by 3.4% if compared to the previous year), aluminum 70.3%, wood 64.9% and bioplastics 56.9%.

In Italy certified compostable packaging are processed together with urban organic waste in organic recycling plants. Typically, BIOPAP® certified compostable trays and meal trays used by professional caterers for school, corporate, hospital catering are collected with food residues in biowaste and turned to quality compost.

Italy is a forerunner in biowaste collection and treatment. Today it has a capacity for treating organic waste (green and organic municipal waste) that guarantees the self-sufficiency of the national System with a network of 357 plants distributed throughout the territory treating approximately 5 Mt of municipal waste, including compostable food packaging and compostable bioplastic products.

About 52 million inhabitants are involved in intensive collection schemes for biowaste (foodwaste + greenwaste) diverting about 7,4 Mtons of biowaste from disposal to recycling, converted into compost and turned back to agriculture, landscaping and orchards. Moreover the integration of composting with the anaerobic digestion process also made it possible to obtain approximately 409 Mm³ of biogas, part of which used for the production of electricity (approximately 411 GWh) and thermal energy (approximately 169 GWh).

A success for the circular bioeconomy, using local resources, creating local jobs and helping in significantly reducing CO2 and Methane emission from organic waste landfilling or incineration.

At BIOPAP we have been believing in circular Bio-economy for over 22 years now. All our food packaging solutions have been eco-designed with renewable and non-agricultural raw materials and certified compostable to allow an even larger share of food waste collection to the composting stream.

CIC estimates about 2.000 workers directly employed in biowaste sector and 10.000 employees in the other activities related to the biowaste recycling (i.e. collection, technical support for planning and building plants, activities to promote the use of compost), with steady growth prospects in the future.
