    Biopap®: Pioneers of Benefit Corporation principles before the concept existed

    The concept of Benefit Corporation has gained increasing recognition and popularity as a way of doing business that seeks not only profit but also a positive impact on society and the environment. However, there are companies that embraced these principles long before they became a widespread trend: Biopap® pioneered the integration of Benefit Corporation principles even before the term was coined.

    In a recent article, Massimo Folador on Avvenire emphasizes Biopap®s founding with a genuine ethical mission, guiding every decision and action taken by the company since its inception.

    What distinguishes Biopap® as a Benefit Company even before the very concept of Benefit Corporation existed? The answer lies in the company’s DNA: from the outset, Biopap® incorporated into its corporate vision the idea that success should not be evaluated solely in terms of financial profit but also based on the positive impact it generates on society and the environment.

    Biopap®’s story serves as a compelling example of how profitability can coexist with ethical values and a commitment to sustainability. While the concept of Benefit Corporation continues to gain traction in the business world, companies like Biopap® lead the way, demonstrating that economic success can align with societal and environmental well-being.

    Dedication to sustainability permeates every aspect of Biopap®’s operations, from the production process (utilizing PEFC certified raw materials, zero-emission, zero-waste production, and reduced energy consumption, sourced from 100% renewable sources) to fostering eco-conscious choices beyond production. Whether through partnerships with educational institutions or community initiatives, Biopap®actively promotes awareness of eco-sustainable practices.

    In an era where consumers and investors increasingly prioritize the societal and environmental impact of their actions, Biopap® stands as a shining example of how a company can thrive while remaining socially responsible. Its success not only inspires but also encourages other businesses to embrace sustainability and social commitment, fostering a brighter future for all.

    2024 begins with a decisive step towards complete Sustainability
    We are thrilled to share with you important news: BIOPAP® is now officially a BENEFIT Company!

    “With the transition to a Benefit Company, we want to contribute to the construction of a community oriented towards environmentally socially sustainable development. This reflects our long-term vision and commitment to generate value for the entire community, and foster a positive supply chain,” says Maria Teresa Brassiolo, Board Member, and Co-founder of BIOPAP®.

    BIOPAP is recognized for producing sustainable, compostable, and biodegradable food containers with unique features of circularity and performance. Massimo Folador, CEO of Askesis Società Benefit Srl, who has accompanied BIOPAP® on this journey, comments: “BIOPAP® has been a Benefit Company since its inception, due to the ethical business choices and sustainability efforts made over the years. Today’s formal decision represents a natural progression, and above all a testimony to its community.”

    The innovative legal instrument of a Benefit Company, provided by Italian legislation, involves an analysis of the company’s characteristic values, the definition of the Common Good, and a modification of the corporate statute with specific commitments regarding governance, purposes, and reporting.
    “For these reasons, we have chosen the transformation into a Benefit Company. We believe that this is a strong and lasting commitment that best represents our business vision,” declares Filippo Rossi, Co-Founder, and Board Member.

    BIOPAP® has always been committed to minimizing the environmental impacts of its activities through reduced resource consumption, zero CO2 emissions in its production process, zero waste, and the use of raw materials and energy exclusively from renewable sources. Similarly, it is socially active both internally and externally to promote local employment, the quality and safety of work environments, the exchange between schools and industrial activities, and the development of talents in young students.

    “The transition to a Benefit Company is a natural step for BIOPAP® and aims to be an active testimony and an example to promote and rediscover the commitment that every business must have towards society and the environment. Thanks to all the members who have approved this path, to the Askesis team, and to all colleagues and collaborators who have actively participated in meetings, share, and animate this spirit every day,” concludes Michelangelo Anderlini President, and Co-founder.

    Thank you for being a part of this important transition towards a more sustainable future.

    We thank the PLEF Association – Planet Life Economy Foundation ETS for giving us the opportunity to testify and talk about our experience and our sustainability journey.

    The interview, taken from the Green News Podcast, is part of the selection of contents on sustainability issues with focus on the business sector and on consumer goods

    The October 20th edition gave the stage to Michelangelo Anderlini, President of BIOPAP® S.r.l. Benefit Company, on BIOPAP’s  sustainable approach and on the principles that have guided its development and the start-up of the new 0-emissions production plant.

    We want to report some very thoughtful comments from those who have had the opportunity to listen to it:

    √ appreciation for a strategic approach to sustainability, where the purpose is clear superior; what actually goes beyond one’s own interest.

    √ Michelangelo’s intervention recalls the passion of the late Giuseppe Anderlini, co-founder of BIOPAP® who, with targeted ideas and documents, already over 15 years ago, raised awareness among interlocutors of the problem of plastic pollution in the environment and in the seas;

    √ strong attention to the systemic approach, which takes all sustainability constraints into consideration, from energy issues to safety, from water consumption to

    land use;

    √ adoption of recognized certification systems, which guarantee the origin, the product traceability and quality;

    √ attention to nature which teaches us that every system can guarantee itself self-sufficiency and must be able to regenerate;

    √ understanding corporate choices that transcend interests and individuals stakeholders.

    Compostable BIOPAP Genius Meal Tray® Wins the 2023 HOST Smart Label Recognition by POLI.design and FieraMilano

    BIOPAP®’s Revolutionary System for Sustainable Catering in Communities, Cafeterias, Hospitals, and Institutions Awarded by HOST

    Settimo Milanese, September 1, 2023.

    BIOPAP® leader in the production of fully compostable food containers, continues to receive recognition for its innovative products. The BIOPAP Genius Meal Tray® system of trays has been awarded by the judging panel of the HOST Innovation Award, promoted by Fiera Milano in collaboration with POLI.design, in the Green SMART Label category, which is reserved for technological and socio-environmental innovations. The award ceremony is scheduled for October 13th this year during the HOST Milano exhibition at FieraMilano.

    BIOPAP®’s patented revolutionary system, the Genius Meal Tray®, allows for the use of a single integrated and fully compostable meal tray to prepare, store in a refrigerated environment, heat, and serve a complete meal, including appetizers, main courses with side dishes, and desserts/fruits, with one section being hot and the other cold. This innovation translates into a significant reduction in the time required for meal preparation, distribution, and collection. At the end of the service, the BIOPAP Genius Meal Tray® is directly sent for composting along with any food leftovers, eliminating the need for additional handling during collection.

    This system makes the management of meals for communities entirely circular, thanks to a fully biodegradable tray certified as compostable according to the UNI EN 13432:202 standard, made entirely from natural cellulose-derived materials. This new approach optimizes both time and service costs, reduces food waste, and returns organic components to agriculture by initiating composting, completing the cycle with a positive environmental impact.

    For over 20 years, BIOPAP® has been a global leader in the development and production of high-performance food containers, entirely Made in Italy, compostable, recyclable, and sustainable. Their products stand out for their unique circularity and resistance performance at both low and high temperatures, made from certified renewable raw materials.

    “BIOPAP Genius Meal Tray® represents a revolution in meal distribution in communities, optimizing production, distribution, and collection times, reducing food waste, and improving the quality of life for operators and end users,” said BIOPAP® President Michelangelo Anderlini. “We continue our commitment to sustainability and innovation, providing our customers with genuinely new, efficient, and cutting-edge solutions, all while caring for the environment.”

    Italy Best Practice in biological circularity: from the collection of bio-waste with compostable food packaging to the transformation into compost.

    This positive evolution that places Italy as a Best-Practice has gone hand in hand with the development of separate waste collection, which already began in the mid-1990s with the Ronchi Decree. Milan is an excellence among excellences, the city that collects the most bio-waste per capita in all of Europe with over 110 kg/inhabitant equal to 6 times the EU average and allowing a savings in CO2 emissions of over 9000 T/year.

    Italian legislation also requires certified compostable packaging to be collected in the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (FORSU). In fact, compostable food packaging has its ideal end of life together with food residues and kitchen waste to which they give dry matter and from which they draw humidity and microorganisms to facilitate their degradation and disintegration. According to recent BIOREPACK data, in 2022 over 46,600T of compostable packaging was composted out of a total of over 4.6 million T of total bio-waste collection, equal to approximately 1% of the total.

    But compost is not the only positive result of organic waste collection. In the integrated cycles of anaerobic digestion, in addition to composting used for agriculture, also biomethane is produced for automotive use and carbon dioxide for food industry applications. Italy currently has the largest and most advanced organic fraction treatment systems because it has been able to create a virtuous circle with a great variety of treatment plants throughout the territory, favoring the growth of local ecosystems and with great advantages for agriculture.

    The recent proposal under discussion of the European Commission on the management of packaging waste has completely neglected this excellent experience which works both economically and environmentally, bringing a significant positive effect in terms of fighting against climate change. The Italian Model deserves to become a benchmark and can be spread throughout Europe with significant advantages for the environment and for local communities.
